A useful tooltip answers the question a reader has while inspecting a value: what is included, what denominator was used and what qualification matters? Repeating the same large number in a decorative popup adds little understanding.

Keep essential meaning visible on the page. Tooltips are supplementary; readers using touch, keyboard navigation or exported reports may not encounter the same hover interaction.

Start with a specific ambiguity

In the retail dashboard exercise, Software's Paid value is 39,000 paise across all supplied dates. A reader might need to know whether that includes Pending lines, whether it is gross or net of discount and which dates are covered.

A compact tooltip can state: “Paid invoice-line value after line discounts; amounts shown in INR; current report filters apply.” It can add line count, order count and the observed period if those help interpretation.

Do not call the measure recognized revenue unless the source and accounting definition establish that meaning. The synthetic fixture provides invoice value only.

Design the tooltip's filter contract

A report-page tooltip receives context from its source visual according to its configuration. Verify which product, date and other fields actually filter its measures. A tooltip attached to a total, legend or different visual type may not behave like the single category point you first tested.

Microsoft's report-page tooltip guidance explains where these tooltips can be attached, while the tooltip creation documentation describes current setup behaviour.

For the lab, all-period Software has three paid lines across three orders and 39,000 paise. January Software has two lines, two orders and 29,000. These distinct controls reveal whether the period context reaches the tooltip.

Show the denominator for ratios

If the tooltip displays Software's share of Paid value, define the denominator. Across the complete fixture, 39,000/69,500 is approximately 56.12%. Under January, 29,000/47,500 is approximately 61.05%.

A measure that intentionally removes the category filter while retaining the period answers a share-of-period-total question. A measure that removes all filters answers something else. Name that choice in the tooltip rather than relying on the reader to infer DAX filter behaviour.

Do not sum category percentages to validate a measure unless the categories form the intended complete, nonoverlapping population under the same denominator.

Surface a relevant quality qualification

For regional reporting, the Unknown customer member contributes 5,000 paid paise. A tooltip on that member can explain that identity is unresolved and link the reader to the quality detail route where supported.

Avoid placing every data-quality warning on every point. Show the qualification that changes how the selected value should be interpreted, with a general quality status elsewhere on the page.

Likewise, distinguish source-loaded-through time from report refresh time. A tooltip that says “updated now” based on the user's current clock can create false confidence about source freshness.

Keep the content readable

Use a short definition, a few supporting values and a clear scope label. Avoid squeezing a complete dashboard into a small tooltip canvas. Check that units, labels and decimal precision remain readable at the actual display size.

Provide the measure definition in a visible help panel, accessible table or documentation page as well. A hover-only explanation should not be the sole way to learn what a critical KPI means.

Test context and alternative access

Inspect all-period Software, January Software, a total value and a no-data combination. Compare tooltip line and order counts with the source records. Test the report at its intended desktop and mobile layouts and review the exported artifact if it will be shared that way.

The retail lab verifies source controls in SQLite. Tooltip rendering, interaction and DAX context remain Power BI application-review tasks, and no tested tooltip artifact is claimed here.

Exercise: create two tooltip share measures, one using the selected period's total and one using the full supplied history. Show how their values differ under January, then choose labels that make both meanings unmistakable.

NeuraPath's Data Analytics with Generative AI course connects dashboard details with analytical explanation. A good tooltip helps the reader interpret a number and verify its scope without hiding essential information behind hover.
